Why does frost keep building up in my freezer?
Short answer
Frost you have already cleared once, growing back, is the automatic defrost failing to run through to the end of its cycle.
What is actually going on
It comes down to three parts. The defrost heater has burned out. The thermistor that starts and stops the cycle has drifted out of range. Or the door gasket has softened enough to admit more moisture than one cycle can carry away. That last one is the coastal favorite. With the marine layer sitting over Cardiff for weeks at a time the dew point is high, and a marginal gasket that would go unnoticed inland puts visible frost on the rear wall here within days.
What we check, and in what order
Scraping it out again buys you a week and tells you nothing. What matters is that ice sitting on the evaporator does exactly what insulation does: air stops moving through the coil, the compartment gives up a little more ground every week, and the display quietly stops describing what the food is going through. That is why this gets reported to us as a slow decline over a season rather than as a breakdown on a particular day, and why the first real sign shows up in the texture of the food rather than on the panel.
The rear panel comes off and we read the heater and the thermistor directly rather than fitting one and waiting to see. From the front the two failures are indistinguishable, and they are not priced alike. With the panel off the drain gets checked as well, because a defrost circuit that has been struggling for a while has almost always iced its drain too, and clearing one without the other just moves the water onto your floor next week.
