What to have ready when you call

None of it is essential — you can call knowing nothing except that the fridge is warm — but each one moves the job forward on the first visit rather than the second.

  • The brand and, if you can reach it, the model number. On built-in refrigeration it is usually on a plate inside the door frame or behind the lower grille. On ranges and ovens it is often on the frame behind the door.
  • What the appliance is doing, and when it started. "Warm on the fridge side, freezer still hard-frozen, since Tuesday" tells us more than "it broke".
  • Any code on the display, read out exactly as it appears.
  • Roughly how old it is, or when the kitchen was fitted. It decides which generation of control board goes on the van.

What happens after you call

You get a window, not a whole day, and you are told if anything moves. The technician who arrives is the one who diagnoses and repairs the appliance — no separate salesperson, and nobody between you and the person doing the work.

Before any repair starts you get one price covering parts and labor, and it does not change afterwards. If the honest answer is that the unit is not worth repairing, you will hear that too; on Cardiff-by-the-Sea kitchens at this level it is rare, but it is cheaper to hear early.

From the call to the repair

Most of these faults are diagnosed in the first twenty minutes; the value is in not replacing the wrong part.

  1. The phone call. Tell us the brand, roughly how old it is, and what changed. Any error code on the display is worth reading out.
  2. The diagnosis. We measure — coil temperature, defrost circuit continuity, fan draw, water pressure at the valve — rather than working from the symptom alone.
  3. The price. Agreed before the first screw comes out, and it covers both the part and the work.
  4. The fix. Same visit wherever the part is on the van, which is the usual case for the failures that account for most calls.
