What salt air does to a Cardiff kitchen

The lower grille comes off before anything else on a Cardiff service call: the condenser is where salt air shows up first.

Built-in Sub-Zero refrigeration is what we work on, and 92007 is where most of the week goes: Cardiff itself, then Encinitas and Leucadia to the north, Solana Beach and Del Mar to the south, and inland to Rancho Santa Fe, La Costa and Carlsbad. Refrigerator and freezer columns, wine cabinets, ice machines, and the undercounter units tucked into bar cabinetry. All of it serviced in place, in the opening it was installed in, because that is how the equipment was designed to be worked on.

Working in a beach town changes the order you check things in. Onshore wind carries a fine salt aerosol and, closer to the sand, grit with it. That mixture does not sit on a condenser as loose dust the way it does inland. It binds into a felt mat across the fins, and it holds moisture against aluminum that is already in contact with copper. So the coil on a Cardiff unit restricts sooner, the head pressure climbs, and the machine starts running long into the evening and catching up overnight. Owners describe that as the fridge only misbehaving sometimes. It is not intermittent. It is a coil that has stopped rejecting heat.

The second thing the coast does is humidity. Cardiff sits between the ocean and San Elijo Lagoon, and the marine layer keeps the dew point high for weeks at a stretch through late spring and early summer. Every door opening admits moist air, and that lands on the evaporator as frost. A defrost circuit that is only just keeping up will hold together in a dry inland kitchen and fail visibly here. The same goes for a door gasket that has lost a little of its magnetic pull, and for a defrost drain that is only partly clear: in this air there is more melt water to move, and the drain closes with ice before the owner sees anything but a puddle.

Cardiff's housing stock is not uniform either. There are bluff-side homes above the surf line, condos in the Walking District where a full-height column and an undercounter cabinet have to share a galley kitchen, and family houses up through the Composer District and Poinsettia Heights that were built as beach cottages and remodeled around new built-ins. That last group is where we most often find the grille path blocked or the cabinet opening cut a little tight, which starves the condenser no matter how clean it is.

We diagnose on site with the panel off and a calibrated probe rather than the display. The parts we fit are factory-approved, and nothing is touched until you have agreed a price for the work. The scheduling line is answered around the clock, and if you can tell us the symptom and roughly how old the kitchen is, the right parts are usually already on the van.
