Frequently asked questions
How soon can someone get to Cardiff, and is the line really answered at night?
Yes, around the clock, every day of the week, and same-day service happens whenever the day still has room. We would rather tell you tomorrow morning than hold a window we cannot keep. Work sits inside 92007 and the towns either side, so what decides the timing is whether the part your symptom points to is already on the van.
My Sub-Zero is built into the cabinetry. Does it have to come out?
No. The condenser is reached through the lower grille and the evaporator behind a rear panel inside the compartment, so it is worked on standing in its opening. That matters in Cardiff, where built-ins sit in galley runs and remodeled cottages over wood floors. Rollers across a finished floor cost more than the fault did, and a heavy custom panel can twist on the way out.
The manual says clean the condenser every six months. Is that often enough this close to the water?
Usually not, within a few blocks of the sand. Six months assumes an average kitchen. Onshore salt aerosol holds moisture against the aluminum fins, so the dust binds into a mat rather than staying loose. Your own coil sets the interval: a bluff-side house with dogs and a slider left open loads far faster than the same unit inland at Rancho Santa Fe.
Is a built-in worth repairing in a Cardiff cottage, or should I replace it?
Repair almost always wins. Cardiff adds a second reason: these units went into cottages remodeled around them, the opening cut to the appliance, so replacing one becomes cabinetry work and a new panel front. What fails is ordinary: an evaporator fan, a defrost heater, a thermistor, a door gasket, an ice maker module. If it is not worth repairing, you will hear that.
What parts do you fit, and will a repair affect a factory warranty?
Factory-approved parts matched to the model. That matters on coastal equipment: a pattern fan motor or thermistor will usually run, and will usually be back on the fault list within a season of this humidity. If the appliance is still inside its Sub-Zero factory warranty, call the manufacturer first. Sealed-system coverage depends on who carries out the work.
When do I find out what it costs?
Before anything happens. Ask what the visit costs when you book and you get the figure on the phone. The repair is priced once the fault has been found and named, as a single number covering parts and labor, and nothing goes in until you have said yes to it. That number does not grow afterwards.
What does the visit itself involve on a refrigeration call?
The lower grille comes off first, because the condenser is where this climate does its damage. Then the symptom decides: the rear panel for a defrost or evaporator fault, the door and hinge for a gasket that has lost its pull, the drain traced to the pan. Both compartments are read with a calibrated probe, about 38°F and 0°F, before we pack up.
Do you only cover 92007, or the rest of the coast as well?
92007 is the center of the week. The same days take us north into Encinitas and Leucadia, south to Solana Beach and Del Mar, and inland to Rancho Santa Fe, La Costa and Carlsbad. The faults change with the distance: a salt-bound condenser and a beading wine door are coast problems; inland it is ordinary dust and hard-water scale in the fill line.
