What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
A new noise on a built-in is nearly always machinery at the grille rather than anything inside the cabinet, and on this coast the usual source is the condenser fan.
What is actually going on
Salt air works into the bearing, it dries and roughens, and the fan gets louder for months before it finally seizes. The other candidate is the compressor mounts: they harden as they age and pass a hum through the cabinetry and up into the countertop. Neither is an emergency on the day you notice it, but a fan that seizes stops the unit rejecting heat, and at that point a cheap part has turned into a warm refrigerator.
What we check, and in what order
There is a test you can run in ten seconds. Stand at the cabinet and open the refrigerator door. A noise that swells or changes pitch is coming from inside, which makes it the evaporator fan. A noise that carries on completely unchanged is coming from the machine compartment behind the grille, which puts it on the condenser fan or the compressor. A rattle that arrives and leaves with the compressor is usually loose debris in the fan path, and in this town it is as often as not sand and grit that has blown in through the grille and found the blade.
Sand is a real factor in a beach town and it is worth mentioning when you call. Fine sand comes in on shoes and pets, settles at the grille with everything else, and works into the fan and the bearing. It is also what makes a coastal condenser take longer to clean properly, since it embeds in the salt film rather than sitting on top of it. If the unit sits near a door that stays open to the breeze, expect the interval between cleanings to be shorter.

No. The condenser is reached through the lower grille and the evaporator behind a rear panel inside the compartment, so it is worked on standing in its opening. Rollers across a finished floor cost more than the fault did, and a heavy custom panel can twist on the way out.
